Certified Nutritionist vs Nutritionist: What’s the difference?

Some use the terms Certified Nutritionist and Nutritionist interchangeably. It’s important to understand that “anybody” can call themselves a nutritionist; whereas, a Certified Nutritionist is also called a Clinical Nutritionist, or Certified Clinical Nutritionist (CCN). They are professionals who have a four-year degree in clinical nutrition or a master’s degree in human nutrition, have completed at least 15 courses of core nutrition science, complete at least 900 hours of internship, then sit for a national board exam.

To maintain certification, each CCN (Certified Clinical Nutritionist) must complete 40 hours of continued education courses every two years, attend two CCN annual Scientific Symposiums, and re-certify every five years.

Our team of Certified Nutritionists are qualified professionals. We work one-on-one with patients to develop diets based on how food is affecting you — tailoring nutrition interventions to fit your individual needs.

We practice a patient-centered approach, focusing on nutrition education, analyzing lifestyle and eating behaviors, deficiencies, and excesses in your diet, as well as your medical history. Together, we will develop a nutrition plan so that you can be more confident in your food choices, feel healthier, and live a more vital life.

Blood Pressure Nutritionist NYC - Registered Dietitian Bullinia

About Erin Skinner, Pregnancy RDN, IFNCP

I am a board certified Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with a certification in integrative and functional nutrition therapy. I am also a business woman, a wife, a mom, and passionate about women’s and family health. Health and wellness begin with prenatal (even preconception) nutrition. Here are some quick facts about me, my life, and philosophy:

  • I’m a military spouse and veteran.
  • As a working mom of three very active boys, with a husband often deployed, I understand the meaning of time, how important it is to create diet plans for women who need something quick, easy, nutritious, and economical.
  • I have pumped breast milk in cars, planes, tents, meetings, and even shipped it on dry ice to my baby. I understand the importance of breastfeeding nutrition, hydration, and diet tips for mothers to keep their energy up when they’re giving their all.
  • I am an experienced clinician and recognized nutrition leader: I have a private practice, co-created the SIBO academy, and have spent my professional life as a registered dietitian nutritionist to improve women’s health status, wellness, prenatal and postpartum experiences through individualized dietary interventions.

And I can’t wait to be part of your journey.

  • Why did you become a Certified Nutritionist?
  • How will you approach implementing nutrition changes within my current lifestyle?

What to look for when choosing your NYC Certified Clinical Nutritionist:

Choosing the right CCN to work with makes all the difference. Take the time to look into these three key areas so you have the best nutrition coach to help you reach your goals!

  • Reputation: look for reviews and contact clients to see how their experience has been.
  • Coaching style: a CCN’s style should fit what you’re needing, as an individual, to be successful.
  • Counseling skills: changing the relationship with food and eating can be pretty emotional. Your Certified Clinical Nutritionist should be able to help you manage the psychology of these changes.
